We watched an interesting film in my Field Research class today that you may or may not want to look into. The film is called “Ethnic Notions” and examines the representation of African-Americans in theater through history – specifically the negative connotations through stereotypes as Sambo, minstrel, etc. when whites would dress in blackface to play these characters. The film continues by discussing the paradox where Blacks soon began to dress in blackface and “impersonate” these stereotypical personnae. it’s a jarring film, but well done. I’m not sure if it’s available on Netflix, but there may be clips of it on youtube. narrated by Esther Rolle.
